National Peace Council Chairman Calls For Collective Action To Prevent Violent Extremism

The Chairman of the National Peace Council, Most Rev. Emmanuel Kofi Fianu, has called for stronger collaboration among security agencies, civil society, traditional and religious leaders, families and communities to prevent violent extremism in Ghana.

Speaking at the National Dialogue on Civil-Security Engagement in Preventing Violent Extremism in Accra last week, Most Rev. Fianu emphasised that effective security measures must be complemented by inclusive governance, youth employment, community trust and functional early warning systems.

He highlighted the Council’s partnership with Catholic Relief Services (CRS Ghana), supported by the Government of the Netherlands since 2023, to strengthen trust and cooperation between civilians and security actors.

He also urged parties involved in the Bawku conflict and other disputes to embrace peaceful and democratic approaches to resolving their differences.

The dialogue forms part of the Prevention of Violent Extremism Through Social Accountability (PoVETSA) Project, implemented by CRS with funding from the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to him, lasting peace is a shared responsibility, and prevention begins with trust, inclusion and collective action.
