GAF Demonstrates Commitment to Safeguarding National Security

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has reaffirmed its commitment to defending the nation’s territorial integrity and safeguarding national security.

This was through a demonstration of its combat readiness at the 2026 Land Combat Firepower Demonstration held at the Battle Training Camp, Bundase last week.

The annual exercise, which forms part of GAF’s operational training calendar, is primarily organised for students of the Senior Division Course of the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College.

It seeks to bridge the gap between theory and practice by exposing the students to the application of military tactics and the employment of combat firepower in a joint operational environment.

This year’s demonstration featured the 5 Infantry Battalion as the lead unit, supported by elements of the 1 and 2 Infantry Battalions, 16 Artillery Brigade, 15 Armoured Brigade, 14 Engineer Brigade, 17 Army Signal Brigade and the Army Special Operations Brigade. The Ghana Navy and Air Force also participated, highlighting the importance of synchronised operations across the land, sea and air domains.

Delivering his remarks, the Guest of Honour, Member of Parliament for Wa West and Vice-Chairman of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, Honourable (Hon) Peter Lanchene Toobu, reaffirmed GAF’s capability to defend the nation against external aggression.

He commended the Military High Command for its leadership and commitment to developing personnel capabilities, while lauding personnel for their professionalism, discipline and integrity, particularly in mission areas.

Hon Toobu further emphasised the importance of respecting civilian authority and upholding democratic principles.

He commended personnel for the successful conduct of the exercise, which concluded without any reported casualties or damage, and urged the public to accord them the respect they deserved.

He noted that mutual respect was essential to strengthening civil-military relations and sustaining public confidence in the Armed Forces.

The General Officer Commanding, Southern Command and Joint Task Force Commander for the exercise, Brigadier General Edward Awaribey, underscored the importance of continuous training in strengthening GAF’s tactical capabilities and operational readiness.

He explained that the demonstration showcased how a battle group could coordinate defensive and offensive operations, integrating fire support and other combat assets to achieve mission objectives.

Brig Gen Awaribey noted that the exercise also provided an opportunity to assess the coordination of military units in a joint operational environment and enhance their ability to work together effectively.

He further highlighted emerging security threats in the West African sub-region, stressing the need for sustained vigilance and continuous improvement in operational capabilities to enable the Armed Forces to respond effectively to evolving security challenges.

Present were the Chief of the Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Livinus Godwin Bessing, the Chief of the Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, Commandants, Generals and other Senior Officers.
