Asokore Mampong Stool Comes Under Contention over Number of Royal Gates

The Asokore Mampong stool is at the centre of a dispute over the number of legitimate royal gates entitled to occupy it.
The case, which was brought before the Kumasi Traditional Council presided over by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, involves Opanyin Sekyere, Nyantakyi, and Maame Asantewaa.
The Council was informed on November 2, 2026, that the dispute began as a disagreement between Opanyin Sekyere—who claimed the stool has only two royal gates—and Maame Asantewaa, who asserted that three royal gates exist.
The dispute subsequently escalated into the invocation of Otumfuo’s Great Oath by Sekyere against Asantewaa, asserting that she does not belong to the royal family.
According to Sekyere, Asantewaa is a descendant of one Akua Akyaa, whom he claimed was not of royal blood. He further stated that Asantewaa shares no blood relation with him.
“Akua Akyaa’s descendants are not royals, and it is a violation of the Great Oath if anyone from her line is chosen to ascend the vacant male stool,” Sekyere told the Council.
Maame Asantewaa, who countered the oath, disputed Sekyere’s claims and insisted that she is related to him.
The Council also heard that Asantewaa’s grandson, identified as Nyantakyi, invoked the Great Oath against Sekyere to challenge Sekyere’s own legitimacy as a royal.
After confirming that Asantewaa and Nyantakyi are direct relatives, Otumfuo advised them to team up and present a unified claim in the dispute against Sekyere.
However, when given the platform to explain how they countered Sekyere’s oath against Asantewaa, all spokespersons representing the elderly woman contradicted one another.
Consequently, Otumfuo directed the Nifa Division of the Kumasi Traditional Council to either ensure a united front within Maame Asantewaa’s faction or confirm whether they intend to pursue their litigation against Sekyere individually before their next appearance.
