NIA to Begin Nationwide Crackdown on Ghana Card Photocopying From November 2

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has announced a nationwide crackdown on institutions that fail to comply with the National Identity Register (Amendment) Regulations, 2026 (L.I. 2523).
The Authority says its Biometric Verification Taskforce will, from November 2, 2026, begin enforcing the law, which prohibits the manual inspection and photocopying of the Ghana Card for identity verification.
According to the NIA, effective November 2, all institutions that verify identities MUST stop ocular inspection and photocopying of the Ghana Card and onboard onto the NIA Identity Verification System Platform (IVSP) for secure biometric verification.
The directive, captured in its new campaign “STOP PHOTOCOPYING, START VERIFYING,” is aimed at strengthening identity security, preventing identity fraud and protecting personal data.
The NIA has given institutions six days to comply, with a countdown flyer indicating “06 DAYS MORE” to the enforcement date.
Institutions that verify identities, including banks, hotels, telecommunications companies and other public and private service providers, are expected to integrate with the IVSP platform to conduct secure, real-time biometric verification.
The Authority has urged institutions that are yet to onboard to visit www.nia.gov.gh or email idverification@nia.gov.gh for onboarding support.
