All Drones Must Be Registered While Every Flight Requires Authorisation- GCAA

The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has sensitised drone owners about the legal requirement for registration and authorisation of each flight.

In a notice, it noted that drones are legally classified as aircraft.

According to the Authority, under Ghana Civil Aviation Directives (GCAD) Part 28, a drone is not a toy or gadget in the eyes of the law – it is an aircraft operating in controlled airspace.

The GCAA stressed that Ghana’s airspace is controlled and shared with commercial flights, emergency services and general aviation, and therefore no drone flight is exempt from regulation.

“That is why every flight needs authorisation, no matter how short, how low, or how small the drone,” the Authority said in its public notice.

The Authority has outlined three mandatory requirements for all operators, which include registering the drone, obtaining the required licence and meeting the operational requirements.

It noted that this covers all recreational, commercial and private operators.

This, it noted, will avert sanctions and ensure safety in the airspace.
