Bawumia Meets GUTA Leadership Over High Import Duties, VAT Concerns

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has met with executives and representatives of the Ghana Union of Traders’ Associations (GUTA) to discuss issues affecting traders in Ghana.
In a Facebook post, Dr Bawumia said the traders raised concerns about high import duties and demurrage costs, and the increase of VAT for informal sector operators to 20%.
Other concerns covered the lack of access to EXIM loans, foreigners taking over the retail trade, and the high cost of rent and goodwill payments for shops, among others.
According to the former Vice President, the discussions were eye-opening, as GUTA also came with proposals to resolve some of the challenges.
He disclosed that they also discussed the importance of transitioning from just importing to producing the goods in Ghana and the incentives needed to encourage traders to do so.
“It was a very productive meeting, and my thanks to GUTA for this meeting,” Dr Bawumia stated.
