Gender Ministry Checks On Girls Rescued from Father’s Alleged Abuse

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has checked on the wellbeing of four girls currently receiving care at a safe shelter following a reported case of alleged sexual abuse by their father.

On behalf of the sector Minister, Hon. Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, the Director of the Domestic Violence Secretariat, Madam Malonin Asibi, together with some staff of the Ministry, visited the shelter to assess the welfare of the girls and how they have been coping since being placed under protective care.

The girls are currently in school and doing well, according to caregivers at the facility.

Caregivers told the Ministry’s delegation that there has been noticeable improvement in the girls’ emotional wellbeing, with some of the trauma symptoms they initially showed gradually reducing.

The children are also receiving psychosocial support and care to help them rebuild their confidence and settle into their new environment.

As part of the visit, a donation was presented on behalf of the Minister to support the upkeep of the girls.

Madam Asibi conveyed the Minister’s appreciation to the caregivers for the care and support being provided to the children and commended the home for its continued work with the girls and other children under its care.

She also expressed appreciation to the Judiciary and the Ghana Police Service for their roles in the case and appealed, on behalf of the Minister, for the case to be fast-tracked to facilitate the girls’ eventual reunification with their mother, subject to necessary processes and assessments.

She further recommended that the mother also receive counselling from psychologists to support the family’s ongoing engagement and the children’s wellbeing.
