Don’t See Immigrants As Parasites – Ablakwa Urges Africans

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Honourable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has discouraged Africans from perceiving immigrants and people who travel using free movement protocols as detrimental to national progress.

He made the call during a one-on-one interview over the weekend, in reaction to concerns about recent developments in South Africa over renewed tensions following a decision of its apex court on the rights of asylum seekers.

The Minister stated that, “We should not see immigrants and people who travel using our free movement protocols as people who are detrimental to our national progress.

“They are not parasites. We can have an arrangement where we have regulated migration, where the free movement protocols are respected, where the rights of all persons are not violated just because they are travellers”.

Describing himself as a perpetual optimist in the African project and the integration agenda, Hon. Ablakwa said he “remained quite optimistic” and was a firm believer in the vision of Kwame Nkrumah that “we can unite, we can form a political union that will lead us into economic emancipation.”

“We have won the battle against political subjugation, colonialism, imperialism. We now must win the war against poverty, the war against economic underdevelopment. And I believe that can be achieved,” he added.
