Minority Caucus Mourns Passing Of Former Minority Leader Sam Odoi-Sykes

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has mourned the passing of former Minority Leader, founding member and former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), H.E. Samuel Arthur Odoi-Sykes.
In a statement issued on October 7, 2026, the Caucus described the late statesman as a distinguished public servant whose contributions to Ghana were measured not simply by the offices he held, but by the institutions he strengthened and the principles he defended.
“There are men whose contributions to their country are measured not simply by the offices they held, but by the institutions they strengthened, the principles they defended and the possibilities they opened for generations yet unborn. H.E. Samuel Arthur Odoi-Sykes was one such man,” the statement said.
The Caucus noted that Chairman Odoi-Sykes belonged to a remarkable generation of patriots who understood that democracy must be built with extraordinary courage, defended with unshakable conviction and sustained through selfless sacrifice.
It recalled his role in leading the NPP to its historic electoral victory in 2000, which contributed to a peaceful democratic transfer of power that strengthened Ghana’s Fourth Republic.
“Although his tenure as Minority Leader was cut short by the military overthrow of Ghana’s Third Republic and the abolition of Parliament in 1981, his commitment to parliamentary democracy endured. He understood that political leadership was not simply about winning power, but about building institutions strong enough to outlive those entrusted with leading them,” the statement added.
The Minority said his life is a reminder that the highest measure of public service is not how long one occupies positions of authority, but how faithfully one serves the ideals that give those positions meaning.
“Today, we mourn a founding father of our political tradition, a devoted servant of the Republic and a man whose place in Ghana’s democratic history is secure.”
On behalf of the Caucus, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, extended heartfelt condolences to his family, loved ones and the entire Danquah-Busia-Dombo fraternity.
“Chairman Odoi-Sykes has completed his earthly journey. But the democratic ideals he championed, the political tradition he helped build and the nation he served will carry his legacy forward.”
