NACOC, UK National Crime Agency, Dutch Police Sign MoU to Combat Illicit Drug Trafficking

The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the UK National Crime Agency (NCA-UK) and the Dutch Police to strengthen cooperation and joint action against illicit drug trafficking.

The MoU, according to NACOC, is aimed at deepening collaboration, intelligence sharing and operational support to disrupt transnational organised crime networks involved in narcotics trafficking.

The agreement comes at a time when Ghana is facing growing concerns over its role as a transit and emerging distribution hub for illicit drugs, following recent high-profile seizures linked to international networks.

Under the partnership, the three agencies are expected to collaborate on intelligence-led operations, capacity building, detection and interdiction, particularly at ports of entry.

The collaboration builds on long-standing cooperation between NACOC and its international partners.

The Netherlands has supported NACOC with advanced drug detection scanners and training for its K9 Unit to enhance detection of concealed narcotics, particularly on maritime vessels, while the Commission has noted that international partnerships with the Netherlands, the US and UK are complementing local collaboration with other security agencies.

The MoU is expected to enhance NACOC’s ability to track and dismantle cross-border trafficking networks, strengthen border security, and support broader regional efforts to prevent West Africa from becoming entrenched as a global production and distribution hub.
