Ghana Opens Tema-Mpakadan Railway Line To Private Operators Under Open Access Model

The Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) has opened the Tema-Mpakadan Railway Line to private sector operators under a new Open Access Model, creating opportunities for increased private participation in Ghana’s railway sector.

The initiative aims to promote efficient, competitive rail freight services; support the movement of goods; reduce pressure on road transportation; and strengthen Ghana’s position as a regional logistics and trade hub.

According to the Authority, the Open Access Model gives qualified private operators an opportunity to use the existing railway infrastructure while supporting the growth and sustainability of Ghana’s railway industry.

The Tema-Mpakadan line, a key standard gauge line linking the Port of Tema to the inland port at Mpakadan, is expected to play a critical role in facilitating the transportation of cargo from the port to the northern parts of the country and beyond, easing congestion on roads and lowering logistics costs.
