Ghana Gold Board Engages UN University On Collaboration For Environmental Restoration

The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) is pushing for a strategic partnership with the United Nations University Institute for Natural Resources in Africa (UNU-INRA) to scale up environmental restoration efforts in mining-affected areas.

This was during an engagement between the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Richard Nunekpeku, Esq. and a delegation from UNU-INRA, led by its Director, Dr Richard Munang.

The engagement focused on sustainability and opportunities for collaboration towards protecting and restoring Ghana’s environment, particularly in areas affected by mining activities.

During the meeting, GoldBod highlighted its ongoing environmental interventions, including the reclamation of 50 hectares of degraded land in the Tano Nimri Forest Reserve and the rehabilitation of three Ghana Water Limited treatment plants.

According to GoldBod, the water treatment plants serve over 76 communities and about 100,000 people whose water sources had been impacted by illegal mining activities.

Dr Richard Munang commended GoldBod for its commitment to environmental restoration and its efforts to balance responsible gold trade with environmental sustainability.

On his part, Richard Nunekpeku, Esq., welcomed further collaboration with UNU-INRA to advance shared sustainability goals, noting that partnerships with research institutions are critical to achieving long-term environmental resilience.
