Mahama Grants Presidential Pardon to 863 Convicted Persons

President John Dramani Mahama has granted a presidential pardon to 863 convicted persons in commemoration of Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary.

The grant of pardon was announced on Monday, October 5, 2026, in a statement from the Presidency Communications signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications.

Mahama exercised the prerogative of mercy in accordance with Article 72(1) of the 1992 Constitution and following consultation with the Council of State.

The Presidency said the grant of pardon was made in commemoration of Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s history with an act of mercy and national reflection.

The relevant state institutions have been directed to take the necessary steps to give effect to the President’s decision.

The categories of persons granted the pardon are 819 first offenders are to be released outright; 13 very old persons aged 70 years and above are to be released outright, 11 persons on death sentence will have their sentences commuted to life sentence and 6 seriously ill persons are to be released outright.

The rest include 6 persons serving life sentences will have their sentences commuted to 20 years definite, 2 persons under special recommendation are to be released outright, with 3 persons under petitions and 3 others also benefiting, bringing the total to 863.
