Ghana, FAO to Tackle Illegal Fishing, Post-Harvest Losses

The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture is deepening collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) to combat illegal fishing and reduce post-harvest losses.

This came up when the new FAO Representative in Ghana, Mr Meshack Oguna Malo, paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Hon. Emelia Arthur, on Thursday, September 17, 2026.

Discussions focused on fisheries governance, sustainability, financing, data management and support for organised fishing communities.

Mr Malo reaffirmed FAO’s commitment to support Ghana to promote sustainable fisheries management, improve documentation and data systems, mobilise financing, and implement relevant laws and policies.

Hon. Arthur said the Ministry’s four-year plan is anchored on building a sustainable and resilient sector across marine fisheries, inland fisheries and aquaculture.

She listed tackling Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing, reducing post-harvest losses, improving canoe registration and licensing, and strengthening fisheries data systems as key priorities.

The Minister expressed commitment to work with FAO and other stakeholders to strengthen the sector’s contribution to national development and improve the livelihoods of fisherfolk.
