Local Government Minister Meets Deans Of MMDCEs to Review 24-Hour Model Markets Project

The new Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, has held his first engagement with Deans of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) and consultants to review progress on the government’s 24-Hour Model Markets Project.

The meeting, held on Wednesday, 23 September 2026, at the Ministry’s Conference Room in Accra, focused on building a shared understanding of the project concept, exploring sustainable funding opportunities, and mapping out an effective implementation plan across the country.

The 24-Hour Model Markets Project is a flagship initiative under the government’s 24-Hour Economy policy, aimed at modernising market infrastructure, improving trading conditions, and creating inclusive economic opportunities, especially for women and small-scale traders.

Hon. Ayariga, who recently assumed office at the Ministry, stressed the need for close collaboration between the Ministry, MMDCEs and technical consultants to translate the vision into functional and sustainable markets.

He said the success of the project would depend on coordinated planning, local ownership, and innovative financing models that ensure the markets serve communities while driving local economic growth.

The Deans of MMDCEs and consultants also shared updates on preparatory works and discussed challenges related to land acquisition, design standards, and stakeholder engagement.

The Minister assured the meeting of his commitment to fast-track implementation and ensure the project delivers markets that are safe, accessible, and economically viable.
