81st UNGA: Mahama Hails Ghana’s Economic Turnaround as “Ghanaian Miracle”
President John Dramani Mahama has informed world leaders that Ghana has achieved a dramatic economic turnaround less than two years into his administration, a feat some have described as the “Ghanaian miracle.”
He attributed the recovery to disciplined governance, fiscal prudence and an uncompromising fight against corruption, which he said has restored growth, drastically reduced inflation, stabilised the national currency and significantly lowered public debt.
“This remarkable economic recovery story has been independently validated by multilateral financial institutions and major international credit rating agencies,” he said while addressing the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on September 24, 2026.
Mahama said macroeconomic indicators must translate into real improvements in people’s lives, outlining his government’s Big Push Programme to build roads, expand digital connectivity, and construct schools and health facilities, as well as the flagship 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Programme.
Central to the national reset, he said, is a revolutionary expansion of social protection, including the launch of a historic Free Primary Health Care Programme ensuring zero-cost access at the community level, hailed by WHO and the UN as a benchmark paradigm shift for the Global South.
He also announced the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as MahamaCare, to guarantee subsidised care for non-communicable diseases such as renal failure, cancer and diabetes.
President Mahama further announced that Ghana will celebrate its 70th Anniversary of Independence in March 2027 as the first nation in sub-Saharan Africa to break colonial rule and will assume the Chairmanship of the African Union in January 2027.
