China Offers 81 Military Training Slots to Ghana Ahead of Naval Hospital Ship Arrival

Ghana’s defence cooperation with China is set to deepen, with Beijing offering 81 training slots for Ghanaian military officers and announcing the deployment of a naval hospital ship to Ghana in October.

This was announced by the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Tong Defa, when he led a delegation from the Chinese Embassy to pay a courtesy call on the Minister for Defence at the Ministry of Defence.

The Ambassador said the 81 slots are to enable Ghana Armed Forces officers broaden their knowledge and exposure in defence and security, as part of China’s ongoing support to the GAF through professional training, equipment supply, technology transfer, facility construction, maritime assistance and peacekeeping operations.

He also announced that a Chinese naval hospital ship will arrive in Ghana in October to provide medical services to Ghanaians, and invited the Defence Minister to participate in its opening ceremony.

The Ambassador proposed enhanced collaboration in tackling emerging security threats in the sub-Saharan region and greater cooperation in the defence industry.

Welcoming the delegation on behalf of government, Hon. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei said Ghana and China share a longstanding and strategic relationship, and commended China for its consistent support in boosting the operational readiness of the GAF.

He cited China’s assistance in aviation and ground equipment, construction of modern housing infrastructure for troops and installation of modern technological systems.

Mr. Adjei said Ghana is ready to expand cooperation with China into emerging areas such as renewable energy and advanced technology, stressing the need for balanced and sustainable development that benefits both countries.
