Muntaka Charges Immigration Commanders to Crack Down on Illegal Immigrants on the Streets Begging

The Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has charged Regional Commanders of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) to crack the whip on illegal immigration into the country.

Speaking at a meeting with the Commanders in Accra, Hon. Muntaka expressed deep concern over the growing menace of street begging, describing it as unlawful and a major national security threat that must not be allowed to fester.

“Street begging is not allowed in Ghana. It poses serious security concerns and must not be allowed,” the Minister stressed.

He reminded the Immigration Officers that they are the eyes of the nation, responsible for monitoring the entry and exit of all persons and therefore must up their game to protect the territorial integrity of the country.

The Minister issued a stern warning to officers who engage in illegality, stating that anyone caught compromising the system will be punished severely in accordance with the law.

He further directed the Regional Commanders to relay his message to officers across the country to desist from any acts that could jeopardise the peace, security and integrity of the nation.

As part of measures to clamp down on illegal immigrants, Hon. Muntaka also urged Immigration Officers to collaborate with landlords to properly identify and profile the calibre of tenants living in their properties.

He assured Ghanaians of the Ministry’s unwavering commitment to addressing the street begging menace and maintaining peace and security across the country.
