GIS Rescues 662 Children, Arrests Over 1,000 In Crackdown On Forced Begging Syndicates
The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has conducted an intelligence-led operation across the Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions, targeting syndicates that traffic and exploit foreign nationals for forced begging.
During the swoop, officers picked up 1,055 West African nationals, with the majority identified as Nigeriens.
The Service disclosed that 662 children were rescued in the operation.
According to the GIS, one Nigerien woman in custody delivered a baby girl on the same day of the operation.
Some suspected Ghanaians accused of acting as local agents for the syndicates have also been detained.
The operation forms part of ongoing efforts by the GIS to clamp down on human trafficking and migrant exploitation in the country.
