Those Who See Africa as Central to Future Global Economy Will Gain an Advantage – Otumfuo

The Occupant of the Golden Stool, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has urged global business leaders and investors to look beyond Africa’s historical challenges and recognise the continent’s growing economic potential, saying those who act early will be best positioned to benefit.

His Majesty drew attention to the fact that the continent is already stepping into a pivotal macroeconomic role, and early mover advantage will prove decisive for global actors.

Delivering the keynote address on August 27, 2026, at the Africa Business Investment Summit in Washington, D.C., the Asantehene urged global stakeholders to review Africa strictly through its historical developmental challenges.

“For too long, Africa has been described in terms of its deficit. We are told of the roads not built, electricity not generated, the jobs not created, the capital not available and the institutions not strong enough.”

He noted that while these infrastructure gaps are real and require responsible leadership, the true strategic vision lies in evaluating the vast assets the continent already commands.

The Asantehene underscored that Africa’s economic trajectory is fueled by undeniable fundamentals such as a vibrant, youthful population, vast natural reserves, rapid urbanisation, fertile agricultural lands, and a surge in entrepreneurial talent and tech creativity.

“The great error will be to continue to look at Africa only through yesterday’s problems while ignoring tomorrow’s opportunities,” he warned, pointing out that economic history consistently rewards those who can spot major structural shifts long before they become universally apparent.

Drawing a clear comparison to past global transformations, he highlighted how forward-looking investors secured industry-defining positions by anticipating the economic expansion of Asia decades ago and embracing the early digital revolution.

Closing the address, the King of the Asante Kingdom insisted that the global investment community must engage Africa with serious commercial intent—evaluating it not through charity or sympathy, but as a premier continent where substantial economic value will be built over the coming decades.
