Africa Must be Studied as Continent with Significant Economic Value, Not Object of Charity- Otumfuo

The King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has called on global investors and international partners to immediately shift their strategic engagement with Africa away from traditional aid models and toward serious commercial partnership.

Speaking at the Africa Business Investment Summit in Washington, D.C., on August 27, 2026, the Monarch of the Asante Kingdom said that the continent must be analysed as a prime engine of wealth creation rather than a region requiring financial sympathy.

Addressing an assembly of world leaders, institutional investors, and global corporate chiefs, he challenged the outdated global practice of evaluating Africa strictly through a lens of structural lack.

“For too long, Africa has been described in terms of its deficit. We are told of the roads not built, electricity not generated, the jobs not created, the capital not available and the institutions not strong enough,” the Custodian of the Golden Stool stated.

He acknowledged that while infrastructure deficits are real and demand responsible leadership, framing Africa exclusively by these gaps obscures the immense, active economic value already thriving on the continent.

He further underscored that Africa’s vibrant young population, fertile agricultural lands, rich natural resources, expanding urban markets, and rapid technological creativity demand a sophisticated investment approach.

“The great error will be to continue to look at Africa only through yesterday’s problems while ignoring tomorrow’s opportunities,” he warned, pointing out that history consistently favours forward-thinking actors who recognise economic shifts long before they become universally apparent, much like early investments in Asia’s rise or the digital revolution.
