Otumfuo Champions Africa Continental Free Trade Area
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, has championed the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as a transformative framework that fundamentally expands the scale of commercial opportunity for global investors.
Delivering a keynote address on August 27, 2026, at the Africa Business Investment Summit in Washington, D.C., he stated that the pact goes far beyond boosting intra-regional commerce by redefining how international capital evaluates the continent’s economic potential.
The King explained that the trade agreement removes artificial market barriers and unlocks massive economies of scale across all member nations.
“An investment in Ghana should increasingly be understood not simply as one serving Ghana’s population, but one positioned within a wider West African and continental market,” he said.
His Majesty emphasised that this strategic integration principle applies equally across key commercial hubs, including Kenya, Rwanda, Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, Morocco, and South Africa.
The Asantehene highlighted how a unified, single-market ecosystem creates the necessary conditions for sustainable industrialisation, cross-border supply chain integration, and enhanced manufacturing efficiency.
He noted that an integrated Africa makes large-scale infrastructure projects commercially viable while allowing industrial specialisation to thrive.
“The African Continental Free Trade Area presents one of the most significant opportunities available to us,” His Majesty observed, stressing that the agreement provides the structural foundation needed to accelerate sustainable regional growth.
Beyond attracting global capital, the Custodian of the Golden Stool stressed that market integration will empower homegrown business entities to expand beyond regional limits.
He further asserted that the true power of the trade pact lies in its ability to encourage African companies to grow into formidable continental enterprises rather than remaining permanently confined within their national borders.
