Bawku Peace Talks Yield Encouraging Commitment – National Peace Council

The National Peace Council (NPC) says its ongoing engagements with the Kusasi and Mamprusi communities in the Bawku conflict have yielded encouraging commitment to dialogue.

In a press statement issued on Thursday, August 27, 2026, the Council said the engagements, being held with support from the UNDP and the Government of Japan, have been frank and constructive, giving stakeholders space to share concerns and aspirations for peace.

“The NPC, with UNDP and the Government of Japan, reports that ongoing engagements with the Kusasi and Mamprusi communities continue to yield encouraging commitment to dialogue in Bawku,” the statement said.

The Council commended participants for their patience and commitment to peaceful means, noting that progress should not be measured solely by the speed of reaching an agreement.

The Peace Council also called for responsible communication, urging the media, commentators and social media users to verify information and avoid sensational or inflammatory content, including unverified claims, videos and voice notes capable of heightening tensions.

It cautioned that the warning is sharpened by the ease with which AI-generated audio, video and images can be mistaken for authentic reporting.

“Social media must not become another arena for the conflict,” the Council warned.

The Council further called for community ownership of the peace process, encouraging traditional and religious leaders, women and youth to continue demonstrating leadership and commitment to peaceful coexistence.

“Peace that endures must be one the people themselves own and protect,” it stated.

The Council expressed appreciation to the UNDP and the Government of Japan for their support and called on other partners to sustain the process and remain committed to an inclusive, impartial process that protects the confidentiality of sensitive engagements.
