Ambassador Victor Smith Not Linked to Issues in Washington Embassy Forensic Audit – Embassy

The Embassy of Ghana in Washington, D.C., has dismissed claims linking Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, H.E. Victor Emmanuel Smith, to matters arising from a recent forensic audit of the Embassy.
In a press release dated August 19, 2026, the Embassy said its attention had been drawn to false and defamatory statements circulating in an apparent attempt to associate Ambassador Smith with issues under review in the audit.
The Embassy singled out a social media publication by former British High Commissioner to Ghana, Mr. Jon Benjamin, alleging that the conduct under review was at its worst under the current Ambassador to the United States, describing the assertion as “wholly without foundation.”
“For the avoidance of doubt, Ambassador Smith assumed office in Washington, D.C., in September 2025, after the period covered by the audit. He neither exercised responsibility for nor had oversight of the activities under examination,” the statement said.
The Embassy noted that in June 2025, a new team of Foreign Service officers was posted to the Embassy with a clear mandate to address longstanding administrative concerns and strengthen its internal systems ahead of Ambassador Smith’s assumption of office.
It added that a similar commitment to institutional discipline characterized Ambassador Smith’s tenure as Ghana’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and Ireland from 2014 to 2017, where he provided firm leadership in ensuring strict adherence to administrative reforms.
“In Washington, he has once again distinguished himself by championing accountability, transparency and improved service delivery. These efforts have earned the appreciation of the Ghanaian community and relevant stakeholders throughout the United States,” the release stated.
The Embassy stressed that while Ambassador Smith remains steadfast in his respect for freedom of expression and legitimate public scrutiny, such liberties must be exercised responsibly and must never become instruments for maligning character and reputation through conjecture, innuendo or unsubstantiated allegations.
It said the Ambassador remains resolute in the discharge of his duties and unwavering in his commitment to serving the Republic of Ghana and its people with honour, dignity, diligence and the highest standards of integrity.
