Ghana Water Ltd Denies Withholding River Turbidity Data

Management of Ghana Water Limited has dismissed allegations that its staff were threatened and directed not to release data on river turbidity and pollution levels.

In a statement, the company was responding to a video circulating on social media in which a journalist claimed he was denied information at the Kwanyako treatment plant and that GWL staff had been warned against releasing river data.

Ghana Water Limited said its core mandate is to treat raw water and supply potable water to urban populations under the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources.

The company explained that while it conducts internal turbidity tests during treatment and shuts down plants when levels exceed safe thresholds, it does not hold official data on natural river bodies.

According to the statement, official records show that Mr Mensah did not visit the Kwanyako plant.

Ghana Water Limited further stated that the responsibility for managing and monitoring river bodies and keeping turbidity data rests with the Water Resources Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency.

It added that it is therefore totally untrue that the Presidency has directed GWL to withhold river turbidity data.

The company urged the public to take note of the distinct mandates of Ghana Water Limited, the Water Resources Commission and the EPA, and to treat the video circulating on social media with caution.
