Trade Minister’s Intervention Ends Ghana-Nigeria Onion Dispute
The Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has successfully mediated an end to the recent trade dispute between Ghanaian and Nigerian onion traders, leading to the immediate resumption of onion supplies between the two countries.
The resolution follows the lifting of a suspension on onion exports to Ghana by the National Onion Producers and Marketers Association of Nigeria.
The decision restores trade flows that had been disrupted, bringing relief to farmers, traders and consumers in both countries.
At a meeting held in Accra on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, with representatives from Ghana and Nigeria present, Hon. Ofosu-Adjare called for an immediate end to the standoff.
She stressed the importance of strengthening bilateral trade relations and promoting economic cooperation within the ECOWAS sub-region.
The Minister urged all parties to set aside their differences and work toward a more stable trading environment, warning that a prolonged disruption would negatively affect farmers, traders, transport operators and consumers in both Ghana and Nigeria.
The impact of the intervention was felt within 24 hours.
According to Mr Osman Mohammed, Public Relations Officer of the Accra Onion Sellers and Importers Cooperative Society, all four Ghanaian trucks transporting onions from Nigeria to Ghana had been released as of Thursday, August 13, 2026.
The society also confirmed that all Nigerian trucks carrying onions that had arrived in Ghana have completed offloading their produce at various markets across the country.
Traders expressed confidence that the Minister’s intervention would not only resolve the current impasse but also lay the foundation for a lasting solution and stronger collaboration between Ghanaian and Nigerian traders.
They said sustained cooperation would contribute significantly to the growth of agricultural trade within the ECOWAS region.
