KMA and KNUST to Partner on Waste, Traffic and Technology Solutions for Kumasi

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) are set to partner on practical solutions for waste management, traffic congestion, street lighting and technology to address key challenges in Kumasi.

Mayor of Kumasi, Hon. Richard Kwasi Ofori Boadi Agyemang, announced the proposed collaboration on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, when he received a KNUST delegation led by its new Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Christian Agyare.

He said the future of Kumasi lies in strong partnerships, innovative ideas and practical solutions, and called for a stronger working relationship between KMA and KNUST to tackle pressing urban problems.

The Mayor identified waste management, traffic, street lighting, landscaping and technological challenges as priority areas where academia and local government can work together to deliver lasting results for residents.

He urged KNUST departments and students to direct research and innovation toward real-life challenges in the city, noting that practical solutions will help create a cleaner, safer and more attractive Kumasi while supporting investment, job creation and sustainable development.

Hon. Agyemang also urged both institutions to leverage the global engagements of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, to attract investors and explore innovative opportunities for the city.

Prof. Agyare welcomed the proposal and affirmed KNUST’s readiness to collaborate.

He however, called for the partnership to be formally structured to ensure effective implementation.

“When knowledge meets local action, Kumasi can move further, faster,” the Mayor added.
