Ghana Fully Funded Evacuation of Over 1,600 Nationals from South Africa- Foreign Ministry

The Government of Ghana has clarified that it fully funded the evacuation of its nationals from South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks, and did not seek any financial support from the South African Government.

This comes after media reports indicated that the Government of South Africa was requesting $18 million in reimbursement from several African countries for support provided during the evacuation of fellow Africans.

In a press statement issued on Wednesday, August 13, 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated “in unequivocal terms” that the evacuation of all Ghanaian compatriots was fully funded by the Government of Ghana and its Ghanaian partners.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Ghana did not seek any financial or material support from the South African Government to bring our fellow nationals back home,” the Ministry said.

The Ministry noted that since May 2026, more than 1,600 Ghanaians have been evacuated home from South Africa by the Government of Ghana, and the evacuations continue. Government further assured that the latest round of evacuations has followed the same principle, with Ghana and its partners bearing the entire cost.

Upon arrival in Ghana, the evacuees have also been provided with reintegration funds, transport fares and other relief items as part of the government’s commitment to ensure their smooth reintegration.

The Ministry assured Ghanaians that under no circumstances will Ghana be listed among countries being requested by South Africa to reimburse the cost incurred in repatriating foreign nationals.

It reiterated government’s commitment to protecting the lives and welfare of citizens wherever they may be, and pledged to continue taking timely and decisive action whenever the safety and security of Ghanaians abroad are at risk.
