Health Ministry Denies ARV Shortage Claims
The Ministry of Health has dismissed claims of a shortage of antiretroviral medicines in Ghana, assuring persons living with HIV that Antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) remain available at designated health facilities nationwide.
In a statement signed by Spokesperson Tony Goodman, the Ministry responded to a press statement by the Network of Persons Living with HIV in Ghana, NAP+ Ghana, which had raised concerns about the availability of ARVs in the country.
“The Ministry wishes to state categorically as follows: It is not accurate that antiretroviral medicines are unavailable in the country. ARVs are available at designated health facilities across Ghana to support the continued treatment and care of persons living with HIV,” the statement said.
According to the Ministry, restocking of essential commodities including ARVs is part of its routine procurement and supply process. It noted that plans for restocking commodities at the Medical Stores are “far advanced” to ensure uninterrupted supply to health facilities.
The Ministry also refuted claims that antiretroviral medicines have expired at the port, describing it as “incorrect.” It said it continues to work with stakeholders to ensure the effective and timely clearance of medical commodities.
“These efforts are intended to ensure sustained availability and timely distribution of medicines and other essential health commodities to health facilities across the country,” it added.
The Ministry further disclosed that it has engaged NAP+ Ghana and assured the network of its open-door policy in addressing concerns relating to the availability and distribution of antiretroviral medicines.
“We remain committed to constructive engagement with all stakeholders to ensure that persons living with HIV have uninterrupted access to the medicines and services they require,” the statement noted.
Reaffirming its commitment, the Ministry said it remains dedicated to safeguarding access to essential medicines and will continue to take necessary measures to ensure the availability and equitable distribution of ARVs across the country.
