GAF Inaugurates GAFTRUST Fund Board of Trustees

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has inaugurated a 13- member Board of Trustees of the Ghana Armed Forces Trust Fund (GAFTRUST Fund).

The inauguration at the General Headquarters on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, marks an important step towards strengthening the welfare and social protection of personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces and their families, particularly in times of bereavement.

The Board, chaired by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal(AVM) Eric Agyen-Frempong, has been tasked with overseeing the management and effective administration of the Fund. In his remarks, AVM Agyen-Frempong expressed appreciation to the Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, for the confidence reposed in him to chair the Board.

He assured the CDS of his commitment to working with the other members of the Board to ensure that the GAFTRUST Fund achieves its objectives and provides meaningful support to personnel and their families.

The Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, commended the members of the Board for accepting the responsibility to manage the Fund.

He said the initiative was intended to provide immediate financial support to personnel and their families, particularly in the event of the death or injury of a service member.

The GAFTRUST Fund is designed to complement existing compensation payable to the families of deceased or injured service personnel in accordance with GAF regulations.
Under the fund, all members of GAF are expected to contribute monthly.

In the event of the death of a contributing member, the Fund will provide a lump-sum benefit of GH¢35,000 to the surviving spouse or the estate of the deceased. In addition, a one-time Child Education Support payment of GH¢20,000 will be provided to support the educational needs of the member’s children.

Personnel who sustain injuries attributable to the Service will be paid 10% of the total compensation payable under the existing GAF compensation regime.

The GAFTRUST Fund is therefore expected to serve as an additional layer of financial protection for personnel and their dependants, complementing existing welfare and compensation arrangements within the Ghana Armed Forces.

The CDS also announced plans for the establishment of dedicated office space to support the effective administration and operations of the Fund.

With the inauguration of the Board of Trustees, the Ghana Armed Forces has taken a significant step towards institutionalising the Fund and ensuring that its benefits are effectively managed and delivered to beneficiaries.
