KMA Gives 14-Day Ultimatum To Remove Unauthorised Canopies From Shop Frontages

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has directed all owners and occupiers of shops with unauthorised canopies, awnings, sheds, or other structures at the frontage of their premises to remove them within 14 days.

In a public notice dated August 10, 2026, KMA said the directive affects structures erected without the requisite approval from the Assembly.

According to the Assembly, these unauthorised structures obstruct pedestrian movement, encroach on public spaces and road reserves, impede emergency access, create environmental and safety hazards, and detract from the orderly development and appearance of the Metropolis.

KMA has given affected shop owners and occupiers 14 days from the date of the notice to voluntarily remove all unauthorised canopies and associated structures and restore the affected areas to their original condition.

The Assembly warned that failure to comply within the stipulated period will compel it to remove the offending structures without further notice.

It added that the cost of removal shall be borne by the owners or occupiers, and offenders may also be liable to prosecution in accordance with applicable laws and regulations governing physical planning and development control.

KMA called on affected persons to cooperate with authorities to ensure a safe, accessible, clean, and orderly urban environment.
