KMA Cracks Down On Unauthorised Temporary Structures

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has moved to demolish all temporary structures without statutory planning approval within the metropolis.

In a public notice issued on August 10, 2026, KMA said the directive is in line with the Land Use and Spatial Planning Act, 2016 (Act 925) and the Land Use and Spatial Planning Regulations, 2019 (L.I. 2384).

The law stated that no person shall erect, install, place, or occupy any temporary structure without first obtaining the requisite planning approval from the appropriate statutory authority.

According to KMA, temporary structures include but are not limited to shipping containers used for commercial purposes, kiosks and metal containers, temporary sheds and pavilions, site offices, temporary market stalls, event structures and tents intended for extended use, and any other temporary development requiring planning permission.

The notice explained that applications for temporary structures shall be considered and approved by the Spatial Planning Committee of KMA through the established statutory permitting process.

KMA cautioned that any person or institution that erects or occupies a temporary structure without the required approval shall be deemed to be in contravention of planning laws and shall be liable to enforcement action.

These include enforcement notices, removal or demolition of the unauthorised structure, cost recovery for enforcement actions, and prosecution as provided by law.

The Assembly urged all developers and members of the public to regularise existing unauthorised temporary structures where applicable and to obtain the necessary approvals before commencing any new temporary development.
