Asantehene Dismisses Doubts over Legitimacy of Tewobaabihene

The King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has firmly dismissed claims questioning the legitimacy of the Tewobaabihene, Nana Kwaku Duah II.

At the Kumasi Traditional Council meeting on August 10, 2026, His Majesty affirmed that the traditional ruler customarily swore his oath of allegiance to the Golden Stool.

The Asantehene made the statement while strongly criticising one Osei Tutu of Gyamfi Wonoo, who had invoked the Great Oath of Asanteman, claiming that the Tewobaabihene had never sworn allegiance.

Otumfuo set the record straight, clarifying that Nana Kwaku Duah II performed the obligatory traditional rites during the reign of his predecessor.

In a sharp rebuke, the Asantehene recalled that after Tewobaabihene swore his allegiance, Osei Tutu was merely serving as his umbrella bearer and held no position to dispute established stool traditions.

The dispute over the Tewobaabihene’s allegiance emerged alongside a broader land conflict brought before the Council by Oheneyere Abusuapanin Opanin of Sakora Wonoo.

Osei Tutu had been dragged to the KTC over allegations of deploying land guards, destroying farms, and unlawfully selling off lands in Sakora Wonoo and Gyamfi Wonoo under the pretext of holding authorisation from the Jamasi Divisional Council and the Asante Mampong Traditional Council.
