₵13million-Renovated Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park Re-opens
After more than a year, since its closure, the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park (NKMP) has reopened to the general public today, July 4, 2023.
The Park was closed on May 27, 2022.
According to a notice from the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture at the time, the closure was to allow for major works to upgrade the Memorial Park to a standard that benefits the stature of the former President and boosts the attractiveness of the Park and overall tourism performance of the country.
Speaking at the reopening ceremony held at the premises of the KNMP, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said the mausoleum had not seen any major renovation since 1992.
“The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park has not only been renovated but it has also been completely modernised to befit the status” of Kwame Nkrumah who led Ghana to Independence and became Ghana’s first President.
He said the work cost GHC13 million and is expected to attract more than one million tourists annually, up from the 90,000 visitors before the renovation.
He, therefore, challenged the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture as well as its agencies to formulate policies that will enable the Museum to achieve the new target.
Further, he said the completion of the renovation of other Museums including the Yaa Asantewaa Museum is in the offing.
According to the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), the new form of the KNMP comprises an expanded Museum, a Presidential Library, a refurbished Mausoleum, a mini Amphitheatre, a restaurant, a new audio-visual fountain, a gift shop, and a new reception, amongst others.
It said the tourist site will now be open to the public till 10 pm to allow people to visit after work as well as host some evening performances.
