You Are Better Off a Scout Than a Coach; Otto Addo Told
After coaching for twelve years, Black Stars Head Coach, Otto Addo, has been advised to think of quitting coaching and focusing on scouting for the rest of his life.
At a presser after Ghana lost to Niger in the last game of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, a journalist boldly told Addo he was better off a scout than a coach.
In 2014, ahead of the World Cup in Brazil, the then Head Coach of the Balck Stars, Kwasi Appiah, approached Otto Addo who at the time resided in Germany to scout for him in the country, Otto Addo highlighted to the journalist who challenged his efficiency at the coaching role.
Addo noted that he had been coaching for the past 12 years of his life and scouted for six months. He added, “During the scouting I was coaching, I never stopped coaching.”
“Your scouting is better than coaching. You are good at scouting than coaching because in coaching you are not good at all,” retorted the journalist.
Meanwhile, Addo is not ready to resign from the post after the poor showpiece he displayed in the six qualifying games that left his team with only three points.
“I’m nobody who can just wake up and resign. If I would have done this, I would never become a national player, I would never become. I would never become a player in the Bundesliga and I would never become a coach, you know I have a very, very different mindset than somebody who would resign, different mindset, totally, towards them, and I have to protect them, if I would sit here and maybe be sad, maybe when I go home, I’ll be sad, but for them, I have to protect them, so this is the first thing.”
Ghana failed to win any of the qualifying games. Their best was a draw against Niger in the first leg and Angola in the second leg. They finished bottom of Group F.
In their last game at the Accra Sports Stadium, they lost by 2-1 to Niger.
