You Are Agents of Change- Asantehene To Graduands
The Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has challenged postgraduate graduands of the institution to live up to expectations as he regards them as “ambassadors of knowledge and agents of change”.
Speaking at the climax of the 57th Congregation of the institution in Kumasi on March 23, 2024, during which over 800 students were awarded PhD and MPhil degrees in various disciplines, he underscored the significance of their role in moulding the future of the country.
“Today you stand on the threshold of a new chapter in your lives and I urge you to carry forward the values of integrity, innovation and social integrity that define the ethos of this institution. You are ambassadors of knowledge and agents of change and so you have a crucial role to play in shaping the future of our society.”
His Majesty further refused to leave the students in ignorance about the impending obstacles that the world holds in store, as he encouraged them to confront them head-on.
“Embrace the challenges that lie ahead with courage and determination.”
Meanwhile, he advocated for entrepreneurship in the journey to finding jobs. According to him, entrepreneurship is the game changer in the 21st century.
“As you prepare to embark on a journey in the world of work for some of you, seek better job prospects, I urge you to embrace entrepreneurship as the game changer in the 21st century. Our nation needs job creators to complement traditional white-collar jobs.
“The public sector alone cannot accommodate the increasing number of graduates entering the workforce every year. In this respect, I entreat you to explore the diverse opportunities in our economy for the establishment of entrepreneurial ventures tailored specifically to support young graduates with innovative ideas.”
The 57th Congregation began on Mach 21 and saw the graduation of 5,394 students in various programmes out of which 2,418 were undergraduates and 2,976 postgraduates.
The event on Saturday saw 880 postgraduate students- 91 PhD students and 789 MPhil students- of the institution bagging degrees in various fields.
Present at the event were the Minister for Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Rita Akosua Dickson, Chairman of the University Council, Justice Anin Yeboah, Pro Vice Chancellor, Prof Ellis Owusu-Dabo and traditional authorities.
