Why Kotoko Re-signed Abdul Fatawu Safiu
The Asante Kotoko Sporting Club have justified the return of the 2019 Best Player and top scorer of the Normalisation Committee Special Competition, Abdul Fatawu Safiu.
It comes after the Kumasi-based club secured the return of the player on a two-year deal ending in June 2026.
Fatawu moved to Sweden’s second-tier club Trelleborgs in August 2019 after an impressive spell at Kotoko and then joined the country’s third-tier side FC Trollhattan after two seasons.
Announcing his comeback on Monday, Kotoko said it forms part of gaffer Prosper Narteh’s wider plan to compete at the continental level.
“The forward’s return forms part of Coach Prosper Narteh’s aim of securing a return to the CAF Champions League.”
Meanwhile, Fatawu is willing to help the team take the stride.
“Everyone knows Kotoko is the club that I support and as a youngster, it was my dream to play for Kotoko and to get that opportunity twice makes me feel lucky and ready to do everything to help the team,” he told the club’s media.
Kotoko’s spell in the CAF Champions League in 2022 ended in the first preliminary round after losing to Burkinabe side RC Kadiogo.
