Whoever Wins This Election Will Have a Battle on His Hands- Otumfuo

For aspirants in the upcoming Presidential elections, it is all about garnering 50+1 votes to succeed the current President; however, beyond the scramble and yearning to succeed, the Monarch of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, sees a test of mettle.

His Majesty foresees quite a turbulent economic season ahead for the next president.

“Whoever wins this election is going to have a battle on his hands to rejuvenate the economy,” Otumfuo said while addressing the guests at the 58th Congregation of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) on November 30, 2024.

He observes that the country is not through with the ravages the COVID-19 pandemic had on the economy when it struck four years ago.

“Like many countries in the post-COVID war, our economy is not in the best shape.”

Additionally, he highlighted the shift in attention by superpowers of this current dispensation as he alluded to the election of Donald Trump and its impact on aid to Ghana.

“The world is in turmoil and the most powerful nations have been consumed by domestic priorities with little to spare for others. The shoulder we cry on may be overloaded with its own domestic cries to be able to care for others, especially in this ‘America First’ era.”

Otumfuo touched on this subject in an attempt to reason with Ghanaian legislators to hold fast to the time-tested democratic principle of partisan cooperation to facilitate the smooth running of the country amid the current happenings.

“So we must be clear in our minds that countries like Ghana cannot afford the luxury of any prolonged fruitless litigation in the years. The tide of history is against that. ”

Ghana will on December 7 go to the polls to elect a new President and Parliamentary representatives to steer the affairs of the country for the next four years.

Twelve Presidential candidates are scrambling for power. They are Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, an Independent Candidate, Christian Kwabena Andrews of the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), Daniel Augustus Lartey Jnr of the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP) and George Twum-Barima-Adu,
an Independent Candidate.

The rest are Nana Kwame Bediako, an Independent Candidate, Hassan Abdulai Ayariga of the All People’s Congress (APC), Kofi Akpaloo of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Mohammed Frimpong of the National Democratic Party (NDP), Nana Akosua Frimpomaa of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) and Kofi Koranteng, an Independent Candidate.
