WHO: Monkeypox Infections Increase By 50% In 7 Days

A report released by the World Health Organisation (WHO) says that the number of Monkeypox infections globally has increased by fifty per cent (50%) in the past seven (7) days.

The 50% represents 13, 859 new cases.

It also reported that Iran and Indonesia have reported their first cases.

As of August 22, 2022, 41 664 Monkeypox cases had been confirmed by laboratories with 12 deaths in 96 countries, the WHO stated.

The United States of America, Spain, Brazil, Germany, United Kingdom, France, Canada, Netherlands, Peru, and Portugal account for 88.9% of the total infections globally.

“As of 22 August, the ten countries that have reported the highest cumulative number of cases globally are United States of America (n = 14 049), Spain (n = 6119), Brazil (n = 3450), Germany (n = 3295), The United Kingdom (n = 3225), France (n = 2889), Canada (n = 1168), Netherlands (n = 1090), Peru (n = 937), and Portugal (n = 810).”

Statistics from the WHO show that the African region has 404 cases of monkeypox with 7 deaths, the highest death toll globally.

The report added that it has updated the interim guidance on vaccines and immunisation for monkeypox which also emphasises that the “effectiveness of vaccination in the context of the current monkeypox outbreak remains uncertain”.
