What Otumfuo Told 2022 NSMQ Winners
At the Manhyia Palace on Friday afternoon, the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II received seven-time Winners of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), Presbyterian Boys Secondary School (PRESEC-Legon).
John Anim Tenkorang, Alfred Ken Nsiah and Austin, the 2022 contestants were at the Palace to present themselves and their trophy to the King.
Congratulating them for the feat, the King shared some expensive but free words of wisdom with the young Ghanaian high school students.
He said, “Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics is what is holding the world in place today. As you have been taught by your teachers and have won this competition, I hope you will further it.”
The King urged them to hold high education as it’s endowed with enormous benefits.
“Education bridges inequality in social status. In the classroom, there is nothing like a rich kid and a poor kid. What you learn is what will give you a place in this world”.
He also stressed the need to eschew memorization otherwise known as “chew and pour”- a primitive learning method.
“Education now goes beyond what the teacher teaches in the classroom. It’s about understanding and not memorization. After understanding you throw a challenge to yourself and experiment…This will be the country’s ticket to development”.
He finally advised them to be of good conduct.
The counsel from the King received steady nods from the three champions as they sat and gazed at the monarch.
PRESEC on October 26- at the grand finale- won by 50 points to bag its seventh victory in the competition while the hopes of Prempeh College in securing the trophy the sixth time to equalise with PRESEC evaporated with their 41 points.
Adisadel College also failed to take the trophy for the second time with their 32-point score.
The winners were at the Palace with the leadership of Primetime Limited- organisers of NSMQ-, their teachers and the quiz mistress.
One of the three champions will be granted a schorlaship by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to pursue a course in Medicine, Engineering or Mathematics at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) under the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation STEM award.
