What Next After Sagrenti War Anniversary?
The Sagrenti War Anniversary celebration has concluded, but more anniversaries lie in wait on the calendar of Asanteman.
The Sagrenti War anniversary was the first of three auspicious anniversaries scheduled for this year by Asanteman, led by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene.
Two events characterized the 150th Anniversary of the Sagrenti War, which saw some treasures stolen from the Palace of the then Asantehene Kofi Karikari, with Kumasi burnt down to ashes by British soldiers.
The first was a Symposium at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, where a book by Asantehene Sir Agyemang Prempeh II was launched.
The second event, which took place at the Manhyia Palace, was a durbar dubbed Kuntunkuni Durbar on February 8, 2024. Seven of the stolen items, which found their way into the gallery of the Fowler Museum, were officially handed over to Otumfuo at the durbar.
Next Event
Next on the list is the 25th enstoolment anniversary of His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
The anniversary has a plethora of events slated to mark it beginning in March and culminating in May 2024.
It will be preceded by the commissioning of the new auditorium at the Manhyia Palace, the conferment of an Honourary Doctorate Degree by the University of Cape Coast (UCC) and other stakeholders, and a cleanup exercise in March.
In April, Otumfuo will host two separate durbars, the first on April 21 with fetish priests and priestesses and the second on April 24 with ethnic groups domiciled in Asanteman.
This will be followed by fireworks at seven designated venues including Cultural Centre, Heroes’ Park, Manhyia, Tafo, Jubilee Park, Aboabo Post Office, and Adum on the eve of April 26, which will mark exactly 26 years since Otumfuo ascended the Golden Stool.
On April 26, per schedules released by the Planning Committee of the anniversary, a non-denominational thanksgiving service will take place at the Dwabrem grounds at the Manhyia Palace.
In the evening, there will be an anniversary dinner at the residence of the King.
Another thanksgiving service and dinner will be held at the St. Cyprian’s Church and the Manhyia Palace, respectively, on May 6 to mark the 74th birthday of the King.
The 25th Anniversary will climax on May 12, 2024, with a durbar at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.
