We Are Clearly A Target; Ministry Of National Security On Terrorism In Ghana
The Ministry of National Security has for the upteenth time, warned Ghanaians to be on the alert for any suspicious moves in the various towns and cities since the country is viable for terrorist attacks.
“We are clearly therefore a target”, the Deputy Minister for National Security Coordinator, Edward Kwe ku Asomani said while addressing the press on Sunday, May 22, 2022.
Statically, he indicated that within the first quarter of 2022, the African continent witnessed about 346 terrorist attacks out of which 49% occured in the West African sub region.
He described the sub regions as “a hotbed for terrorism” but noted that Ghana which has not yet recorded any case of these attacks is not insulated.
“The nature of the threat is such that it’s not conventional warfare”, he said and added that “We all have to be vigilant”.
“Terrorists want acess to the sea. The nature of the various attacks we’ve had in the sub region indicates that wherever they go, there are some forms of mineral or natural resources, particularly, gold. So the question therefore is, if they attack towns in Burkina Faso that have gold deposits, clearly, Ghana would be an interest. This has been the pinnacle of the southward drift of the terrorists. We are clearly therefore a target.
“Our study of the various attacks in the sub regions usually exploits existing fault lines- ethno religious conflicts, communities that feel alienated or have grievances towards authority”. These fault lines, he said, exist along Ghana’s border towns.
He therefore called on citizens to help through concerted efforts to prevent such attacks.
