Wassa Dunkwa: Mother, 3 Children Drown in Galamsey Pit

A 42-year-old woman and her three children have drowned in a water-filled galamsey pit at Wassa Dunkwa in the Amenfi West Municipality of the Western Region.

The incident occurred on Saturday, February 28, when the family went in search of firewood near an abandoned illegal mining site that had become dangerously waterlogged.

According to the source, the three siblings, led by their 14-year-old elder brother, went ahead of their mother after gathering firewood and fell into the pit as they stopped at the scene.

Their mother, upon arriving at the scene also fell into the pit while attempting to rescue her children.

The bodies of the four were later recovered by the Asankragwa Divisional Police and deposited at the Catholic Hospital morgue.

The Public Relations Officer of the Western Central Police Command, ASP Beatrice Turkson while confirming the incident said investigations are ongoing.

She added that a detailed statement will be issued in due course.
