WAPCo Gas Pipeline Maintenance Causing Power Shortfall

The recent power disruptions in parts of the country have been attributed to the ongoing maintenance work by the West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo).

A joint statement issued by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) said the exercise is causing a shortfall in power supply, requiring some limited load management.

It explained that the shutdown of the Tema station had forced the temporary closure of some thermal power plants in Tema, leading to a shortfall in electricity generation.

Apologising for the inconvenience caused, it expressed its optimism that WAPCo will soon resolve the challenge and restore the gas supply to make way for the delivery of the required power to customers.

Maintenance
In a statement issued on December 11, the WAPCo announced that during the cleaning and inspection of the 56km x 30 onshore pipeline section between Itoki and Badagry, part of the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP) in Nigeria, a larger-than-expected volume of liquids and debris was received at the Lagos Beach Compressor Station.

This, it said, has triggered some operational upsets at Tema Regulatory & Metering Station requiring a temporary shutdown for safety reasons and investigation.

“WAPCo expresses its gratitude to its key stakeholders for their patience during this process and apologizes for any inconvenience caused,” it added.
