WAEC Clarifies Invitation of Candidates with Withheld WASSCE Results

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has denied coercing or intimidating invited candidates during a hearing regarding their withheld West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results.
A day after chaos erupted at the Council’s Kumasi office when some parents and candidates complied with the invitations, WAEC issued a statement to clarify its investigative process.
It said the invitation had become imperative after it concluded scrutiny of the scripts of these candidates whose subject results have been withheld for their alleged involvement in examination malpractices.
“As part of investigations, the Council has concluded scrutiny of the scripts of these candidates and has invited them, accompanied by their parents or guardians, to meet with some selected staff for an opportunity to be given a fair hearing. The candidates are required to respond to the allegations of their involvement in examination malpractice.”
This, it noted, includes taking their written statements in the presence of their guardians.
“This is the concluding stage of the investigation after which the relevant decisions would be taken. They are neither coerced nor intimidated into writing these statements as is being alleged by some of the parents.”
The Council therefore appealed to parents, guardians and the candidates involved to cooperate for an expedited action on the results.
Results
In December, upon the release of the 2024 WASCCE, WAEC relayed that the subject results of 781 and the entire results of 209 candidates had been withheld for various suspected offences.
It furthered that the subject results of candidates from 319 schools have been withheld for alleged collusion.
The withheld results of these candidates may be released or cancelled depending on the outcome of the investigations, it noted at the time.
