VRA Planning Spillage of Akosombo Dam
The Volta River Authority (VRA) is anticipating a potential spillage of the Akosombo dam in the Volta Region.
In a notice dated July 5, 2024, and addressed to stakeholders, the Authority said it intended to engage them for an agreed modality for a controlled dam spillage.
A part of the notice released by the Deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the VRA, Ken Arthur read, “We propose to engage you and the relevant team to discuss the potential implications, mitigative measures and information dissemination.”
He noted that the precautionary measures are crucial to maintaining the structural integrity of the dam and ensuring the safety of communities.
This proactive measure follows the unannounced one last year which caused ravages to parts of the Volta Region, Greater Accra Region and Eastern Region displacing some 26,000 residents, destruction of properties, loss of livelihoods and disruption of healthcare, education and other critical services in these areas.
It was reported that South Tongu, Central Tongu, North Tongu, Shai Osudoku, Anlo, Ada East and Asuogyaman districts were the hardest hit.
