Vormawor Suggests Demo On Historic June 4

June 4 in Ghanaian history is popular for an intense agitation that characterised the Ghanaian army in the year 1979 after former President Rawlings got freed from jail following an attempt to overthrow the military government of the Supreme Military Council (SMC II) of Lieutenant General Fred Akuffo on May 15.

History has it that Rawlings, with his colleagues who were junior officers mounted an uprising against the senior military officials who formed the SMC II government as well as sympathisers of the government killing most of them and forcing many others to seek refuge outside the country.

The coup, was necessitated by a combination of corruption, bad governance, frustration among the general public, and misunderstandings within the Ghanaian army, it is reported.

Bringing this back to memory has been convenor of the Fix the Country movement who is standing trial for an alleged coup threat, Oliver Barker Vormawor.

He has suggested a demonstration against the “contested” Electronic Transfer Levy (E-levy) which the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) says is raking in substantial revenue for the country already.

“Are we really not going to do an E-Levy Demonstration on Saturday, June 4th?”, he asked.

This was relayed in a Facebook post.
