Virgin Atlantic Airlines Resumes Operation in Ghana
Virgin Atlantic Airlines has announced plans to resume operations in Ghana after they suspended their services 11 years ago.
The company announced this in a statement on Monday, September 2, 2024, as it is encouraged by the fact that the United Kingdom (UK) is home to the third largest Ghanaian diaspora in the world.
It intends to operate a daily service from May 1, 2025, on Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft between London and Accra and back.
The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has since welcomed the news.
It released a statement on Tuesday saying, the return of the airline underscores confidence in Ghana’s aviation industry and significantly boosts efforts to establish Ghana as the preferred aviation hub and leader in airport business in West Africa.
It anticipates the move will provide the travelling public with greater connectivity options.
The Managing Director of GACL, Mrs Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, said, “We are thrilled to welcome Virgin Atlantic back to Ghana, which will become the 25th international airline to operate at Kotoka International Airport. We look forward to collaborating with Virgin Atlantic to ensure seamless launch of their operations and continued facilitation at the airport.”
The airline launched its operation in Ghana in 2010 but suspended its services three years later over fuel costs, according to reports.
