UPSA Decent Dressing: Morality Isn’t Ornamental- Kofi Asare

The Executive Secretary of Africa Education Watch, Kofi Asare, has criticised the University of Professional Studies, Accra, definition of decent dressing, affirming that “morality isn’t ornamental”.

In a Facebook post, he agreed that outfits for lectures must not be revealing, suggesting trousers for all to prevent indecent exposure, especially to lecturers.

“That’s gender-responsive, and I support it.”

However, he argued that the ban on anklets or nose rings was uncalled for.

“Morality isn’t ornamental.”

In earlier posts, he tore into the University’s decision to restrict the wearing of tracksuits, leather slippers or shorts to lectures.

According to him, institutions rather focus on building people with integrity rather than those with formal looks.

“It is better to wear anklets to class and not cheat than to wear suits and ties and copy during exams. Decent dressing is important, but what is decent may not be only formal. There is nothing immoral about wearing leather slippers. Morality is not stitched in formal uniforms.”

“Character should not be measured by formal dress codes. We are raising a generation that fears breaking rules of appearance more than breaking rules of integrity. Let us fix the heart, not just the hem. Let us raise honest minds, not just well-dressed ones.”

On Wednesday, a task force on campus prevented students in slippers and indecently dressed from entering lecture halls.

This followed rising indecency on campus.

“You are therefore reminded to keep abreast with the provisions on the dress code as stated in the Undergraduate Students Handbook 2018 on the university’s website…With effect from July 1, 2025, a task force will be positioned at strategic locations on campus to enforce the dress code and bring sanity to campus,” a memo by the Dean informed students.
