UCC Salutes Otumfuo

The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has expressed its profound and unwavering respect and admiration towards the King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for his selfless contribution and dedication to humanity and the betterment of Ghana.

At a convocation to honour the King which marked the University’s third honorary degree to a traditional leader in Ghana, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Johnson Nyarko Boampong acknowledged the contribution of His Majesty and affirmed that Otumfuo was more qualified by all standards to receive the honorary degree.

“Consistent with global practices, the Management of University Cape Coast on behalf of its academic board and social community finds His Majesty more qualified by these parameters to receive the degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD), Honoris Causa.”

Prof Nyarko Boampong furthered, “His vision and unwavering commitment has profoundly impacted both his kingdom and the broader world. Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has achieved a lot in his lifetime as a great leader that time will not permit me to say. On behalf of the Governing Council, management and staff of the University of Cape Coast, we salute Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

“For his meritorious service to the nation, particularly his commitment to promoting unity and development in Asanteman and other regions as well as his significant contribution to humanity in the areas of water and sanitation, health, education, entrepreneurship, culture and heritage.”

He indicated that the conferment also recognizes His Majesty’s “invariable” lessons offered to the country as a blueprint for an ideal leadership through his reign.

He remarked, “Your dedication to conflict resolution and stabilization of regions and beyond Asante Kingdom has been exemplary.”

The event was hosted at the New Examination Centre (NEC Hall) of the university in Central Region on September 5, 2024.

Present at the event were eminent Asante traditional authorities, Osabarima Kwesi Atta II, the Paramount Chief of the Oguaa Traditional Area, Nana Ekua Abookye VI, the Queen, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Education Minister and Hon Francis Asenso Boakye, the Minister for Roads and Highways.

Also present were Sir Sam Jonah, the Chancellor of the UCC, Prof Johnson Nyarko Boampong, the Vice Chancellor of UCC, Prof Rita Akosua Dickson, the Vice Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), the Indian High Commissioner to Ghana, H.E. Manish Gupta and others.
